Cheshire
At 905 square miles in breadth, and with a population of 700,000, Cheshire is a predominantly rural county made up of two large towns, Warrington and Chester, and a range of small villages. It is considered highly affluent both for its heritage and its inhabitants. Founded by the Romans in AD79, Chester’s long and fascinating history is very much in evidence with ancient city walls that can be walked and its magnificent Chester Cathedral that dates back to 1092. It’s also boasts the famous Cheshire cheese, Chester Racecourse (Britain’s oldest sporting venue still in use) and Britain’s largest working salt mine, which was first established in 1844. Meanwhile, with its proximity to Liverpool and Manchester, it’s considered truly cosmopolitan, and particularly popular with sports personalities. It has been home to everyone from footballer Wayne Rooney, cricketer Ian Botham and marathon runner Paula Radcliffe at different points.
