North East England

Home to a population of 2.5m, North East England is full of ‘passionate people, passionate places’ according to its slogan.  And it’s certainly the case.  Encompassing county Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, and Teesside, this region is as rural as it is urban, with as many magnificent castles and fortified towers as maritime cliffs and extensive moorlands.  Visit the Tees Estuary for the saltmarshes of Lindisfarne, heaths, bogs and hay meadows of the North Pennines.  Or the Durham Dales for some exhilarating uplands and tranquil valleys with rare wildlife.  For more history and heritage, Northumberland’s castles are extremely impressive, as is the medieval city of Durham.  Combined with its World Heritage Sites - Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle and Hadrian’s Wall – and stunning architecture, this region plays a significant part in making England truly special.
