Tyne and Wear
On the northeast coast of England, the cities of Newcastle and Gateshead face each other across the River Tyne. This region won the nation’s favourite English city-break destination in The Guardian/Observer Travel Awards four years in a row, thanks largely to its arts and culture. There’s the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, the award-winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Sir Norman Foster’s glass and steel Sage Gateshead music venue, and Antony Gormley’s iconic Angel of the North sculpture. This is Britain's largest sculpture at 20-metres high with a 54-metre wingspan. Also in this county is Sunderland, famed for its glass and ship-building industries, beautiful sandy beaches and lively city centre. Further beaches can be found at South Shields, birthplace of the self-righting lifeboat, and in Tynemouth, which has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall, a Roman fortification, has ruins from Newcastle to Carlisle.
