Durham
Built on seven symbolic hills, Durham city is located within county Durham and is as hilly as it is symbolic. With archaeological evidence suggesting it was a settlement as early as 2000BC, the present city can be traced back to 995AD, with two of its most famous symbols erected shortly afterwards. Stunning Durham castle was built by the Normans in 1066, and has been occupied by University College Durham since 1840. Meanwhile, Durham cathedral dates back to 1093 and, along with being a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains one of finest Romanesque cathedrals in Europe that’s still in operation today. In fact, the entire city of Durham is a sight to behold. A designated conservation area since 1968, it includes over 630 listed buildings, with 569 located within the city itself.
