Islington

A borough of London located in the north of the city, Islington’s colourful past is still very much in evidence today.  Originally a village in Middlesex dating back to the 13th and 14th century, Islington was made a metropolitan borough in 1899 and a London borough when it merged with Finsbury in 1965.  Today, its influence goes far beyond its six square miles and population of 200,000.  In the 19th century, it was home to affluent clerks, artisans and professionals, together with theatres and music halls.  And, despite an era of depression in the mid 1900s, this affluence pretty much sums up the locality today.  Recent residents include everyone from former PM Tony Blair and London Mayor Boris Johnson to actors Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent.  Meanwhile, it is a hive of culture and creativity, with some of the UK’s leading theatres – including the Almeida, the King’s Head and Sadler’s Wells.
