Harrow

Originally formed in 1934 as an urban district of Middlesex, Harrow became a London borough and part of Greater London in 1965.  Considered an affluent area today, Harrow has a large commuter community, given its location just 12 miles from the city.  A cultural melting pot in its own right with a variety of annual festivals, it’s perhaps best known for being home to Harrow School.  Founded in 1572, and attended by 850 full-time male boarders still today, it boasts eight former prime ministers, including Churchill, two kings and literary greats such as Lord Byron.  But Harrow is also famous for another prominent British figure.  One of the biggest name in fashion today, Dame Vivienne Westwood moved to Harrow with her parents at age 17, attending Harrow School of Art before dropping out to become a teacher.  Her reason? “I didn’t know how a working class girl like me could possibly make a living in the art world.”
