East of England
With its unspoilt character, rural landscape, amazing architecture and large number of traditions, the East of England is celebrated for its beauty, history and heritage today. Stretching 7,380 square miles – 109 miles north to south and 108 miles east to west - the region is based around the ancient kingdom of East Anglia, which was originally made up of Norfolk and Suffolk. Today, it also encompasses Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Hertfordshire. Boasting 250 miles of coastline from The Wash to the wide expanse of the River Thames, and one National Park, The Broads of Norfolk and Suffolk, people can see everything from crumbling cliffs to Britain’s best mudflats and saltmarshes. For heritage, Cambridgeshire has one of Britain’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Meanwhile the historic cities of Norwich, Peterborough and St Albans are all worth seeking out, as are the region’s many market towns and picturesque villages.
