Norfolk

Once candidly described by Noel Coward as “very flat”, Norfolk is today celebrated as one of Britain’s most tranquil counties, with such a stunning coastline that is now a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Perhaps it’s no surprise then that the region boasts picturesque seaside towns and excellent seafood, with regional dishes including Cromer crab and Brancaster mussels, each named after an area on the Norfolk coast.  Inland, water remains central: the network of rivers and canals known as The Broads are home to diverse birdlife and wildlife.  Meanwhile, Norfolk’s low population density creates its air of calm.  The county’s most populated area is Norwich, with its magnificent Norman Cathedral, a castle, and more than 30 medieval churches.  Other urban areas of this mainly rural county are Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn, and a number of small market towns.  It’s most famous resident has to be The Queen, whose Norfolk retreat is Sandringham House.
