Nottinghamshire

Think of Nottinghamshire, and you think Robin Hood.  The legendary tales of this Sherwood Forest-dwelling hero – who, with his band of merry men, famously ‘robbed from the rich and gave to the poor’ – are alive and well in the heart of England.  Today, the Forest is a protected site of special interest, and Hood has its own festival, which takes place every summer, complete with jousting, archery and falconry.  Nottinghamshire was also home to Lord Byron and D H Lawrence, the latter of whom set many of his poems in the area.  The region also boasts Britain’s only known Ice Age cave art at the Creswell Crags limestone gorge.  These drawings, which are thought to date back 13,000 years, depict birds, bison, deer and a horse.
