Care Home Raise Awareness on Negotiating Care

General Manager Caron Sanders-Crook from Westwood House Care Home in Sydenham was so concerned by her local community's lack of understanding on how to gain access to help and advice on care issues that she decided to hold an event at her care home to improve public awareness. The idea is to provide the community with the opportunity, to find out about their rights, options and choices when dealing with long term care issues, how to access support agencies, find out about benefit entitlements, how to fund long term care and speak to specialists on how to negotiate the complexities of the care maze.

Caron explained, "We are in the business of care and I believe that should include all the associated issues. I see the awareness day as a way of making sure that the older people in our community get the help they need and whether that is guidance on how to get the right benefit entitlement, advice on finding a suitable home, paying care fees or information on the importance of setting up and Lasting Power of Attorney."
CareAware and Care Asset Management are involved in supporting the event.

Julie Emmott, Development Director for CareAware, an independent, non profit making advisory service for all aspects of long term care explained that "Public awareness is at the forefront of the care agenda and as a result demand for our service is increasing rapidly". Julie added, "Events like this can only help to improve understanding and assist people to overcome their concerns on how to deal with a care need".

The event will be held on 26th June 2008 from 2pm - 5pm.
There will be a presentation from 2.30pm - 3.30pm by Philip Hurst from Care Asset Management
