Winter's approach 'concerns elderly'

Concerns over staying warm and well as the cold weather takes hold of the nation is troubling much of Britain's elderly population, a national charity has said.

More than half of pensioners surveyed in a poll by Age Concern are cutting back on both food and heating due to the heightening cost of living, it was revealed.

"We would urge any older person who is struggling to make ends meet to find out if they are entitled to benefits, which could help to make paying their bills easier," according to Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed there were over 22,000 deaths caused by such problems in 2007, the charity added.

This Morning, ITV's daytime TV show, announced this week that it would be helping Age Concern raise funds for its appeal over the Christmas period.

Focusing on areas such as depression, poverty and social care, the campaign will continue for two weeks.
