Happy Birthday!

21/06/2010

Celebrations were in full swing at Bushey House Beaumont, as one of our residents hit her 90th birthday in style.

Vera Soskins was joined by staff, family, friends and other residents as she received recognition of reaching the amazing age. A birthday party with local entertainer Jonathan Stevens was held, where the crowd were enthralled with hits from Broadway and Hollywood musicals as well as chart classics. A huge birthday cake was beautifully decorated by our home's chef and everyone truly enjoyed celebrating this marvellous occasion with Vera's nearest and dearest. Vera has been at Bushey for 13 years now and her birthday celebrations in the house are legendary.

Before coming to Bushey House Beaumont to start enjoying her new life chapter, Vera Soskins  led an eventful life. She was evacuated during the blitz in London and was sent to Macclesfield. When Vera returned to London she became a ‘Fire Watcher' outside the BBC in the West End near her father's business. Vera absolutely loves music and shows and we imagine this is where her love of the theatre grew from. Vera married husband Harold Soskins whom she met during the war. During this time, Harold was sent over to India and Vera started working in very smart clothing establishments within London's Oxford St. Her husband returned, and they had one daughter Susan together. Later in life she ran her late father's furrier business after the loss of her husband. She did this until her son-in-law took over the business; eventually retiring when the business was closed.

Among those relatives attending was her daughter Susan Cohen and her husband Stephen Cohen, who played host for the afternoon to over 75 invited guests. Speaking about her 90th birthday Vera's daughter was delighted that her mother was in great spirits and really enjoyed the afternoon's celebrations. Susan said: "Vera is and has been fantastic toso many over the last 90 years, and it's wonderful to be with her on this very special day just to say how proud she makes us all feel."

Lynn Silver, General Manager of the home, added: "We're delighted to celebrate when as truly remarkable a woman as Vera reaches this amazing milestone. Vera is such a popular resident, who always has an interesting tale to tell. We look forward to hearing many more as Vera moves towards the century".
