MS Society wins excellence award

Charity delighted to scoop prestigious gong in recognition of the way in which it runs its operations.

UK-based charity the MS Society has won an award for excellence.

The multiple sclerosis (MS) charity was awarded with the Accountability and Transparency gong at the Third Sector Excellence Awards.

It has been given the award in recognition of its success in establishing open and effective channels of communication with stakeholders.

The innovative and open ways in which the charity communicates with its members, as well as its unusual practice of giving organisational email addresses to trustees, were among the process singled out for particular praise.

Referring to the award as a "tremendous achievement", chief executive of the MS Society Simon Gillespie said: "Changing culture in this way is a genuine team effort with staff and volunteers working effectively together and the Society's achievement is well-deserved."

The MS Society recently joined forces with charitable trust Sense About Science to produce a guide which aims to dispel myths surrounding many so-called "miracle cures".

In their leaflet entitled 'I've Got Nothing to Lose By Trying It', the organisations referred to the emotional and financial costs of treatments which sell false hope to patients.
